Picking out your wedding attire is such a special part of wedding planning, and that’s true for elopements too! Trying on wedding dresses, especially if you choose to include friends and family, can be an incredibly emotional step in preparing for your wedding. After all, it’s the day that you should feel the most beautiful you ever have! Whether that means wearing a long, flowing gown, or something more simple, it’s important that your wedding dress reflects your personality and makes you feel amazing. That being said, there are a few notes to keep in mind when you’re buying a wedding dress for an adventure elopement, so I’ve created this guide to help make the process easier!
When it is time to start wedding dress shopping for your elopement, you should have at least a rough idea of the activities taking place on your elopement day. Whether that means you’re skiing, hiking, skydiving, or just driving to a beautiful scenic spot — those are all things to keep in mind when choosing a dress! For most adventure elopements, the most important thing to keep in mind when dress shopping is your range of motion. Will you be able to move your legs enough to hike a mountain or simply climb on a rock for a great photo? If you’re planning a picnic, will you be able to get down to the ground and back up again? Can you lift your arm over your head so you can have the perfect twirl during your first dance? The weight of the dress and the overall cut will have a huge impact on your mobility during your elopement, so it’s definitely best to try on your dress and make sure you can do everything you will need to while wearing it.
Accessories are a fantastic way to elevate your wedding look, but also a great option to help prepare for some of the crazy weather you might encounter while eloping outdoors! If you’re eloping somewhere cold or windy, it’s a great idea to look into shawls and shrugs to add to your wedding outfit to keep you warm. Or maybe you’d prefer a cool customized leather jacket! Accessories can also add drama and movement to an otherwise simple gown. When blown in the wind, a long veil or cape can create absolutely stunning photographs! There are so many great options to upgrade your wedding outfit, and can make it feel like a totally unique second look!
When picking a wedding dress, it’s also good to consider if you will be traveling to your elopement destination. Especially if you are flying with your dress, packing and transportation can be tricky. While you can figure out a way to travel with absolutely any dress, lighter, more flexible, and less voluminous dresses will be the easiest to bring with you.
When flying with a wedding dress, you should always bring it to the cabin with you. It’s not worth checking the dress and risking something happening to it! The simplest way to travel with your dress is to put it in a garment bag and then fold it neatly into a carry-on bag that can fit in the overhead bins. However, some airlines offer hanging space in the front of the plane, so it may be worth calling ahead and asking if your dress can be hung on your flight if you have a more voluminous dress. Make sure to bring an iron or steamer (check which is appropriate for your dress material) with you to your destination so you can smooth out any wrinkles before your big day!
