There are so many important aspects of your wedding day including your the venue, the dress, flowers, details, photographer, videographer, favors, and the list goes on and on. But one wedding day decision that is often over looked is the DJ! Most people have a few things that they absolutely WANT to have for their wedding day, and often the budget for a great DJ get pushed aside. But, I’m here to let you know that having a good DJ can actually make or break your wedding day!
There are so many moments that take place leading up to the ceremony on your wedding day, that often you forget to consider what happens after you get married. A good DJ will make your reception seamless and FUN for all of your wedding guests. So here are some tips for picking your DJ.
DECIDE ON YOUR STYLE
Did you know that each DJ has their own style and preferred set list of songs that are their ‘go tos’ on a wedding day?! This is an important thing to realize when choosing a DJ, because of course you want to enjoy the music on the day of your wedding. So think about what type of music you love and make sure that these are the types of songs your DJ will play. Of course a DJ will play what ever song you would like to hear, so I definitely recommend making ‘requests’ and ‘do not play’ lists for your DJ, as well!
MAKE SURE YOU VIBE WITH THEM
The DJ is essentially the voice of your reception. So make sure to meet them in person and make sure they are friendly and confident. You want to make sure you can trust them to communicate announcements to your guests, lead the entrances in a fun entertaining manner, and keep everything on time. Timing is so important when it comes to creating a seamless and fun party!
GET TO KNOW WHAT SERVICES THEY OFFER
Like I’ve said, not every DJ is the same. Be sure to ask them questions about how they run their business and what you can expect from their services. Here are some great questions to ask:
1. Do you plan to use lighting or any other special effects?
2. Can we come listen to you perform?
3. Can you play the songs that are important to us?
4. What do you typically wear?
5. How do you handle song requests?
6. Can you act as the master of ceremonies?
7. How do you motivate a shy crowd to dance?
8. Do you have a specialty?
9. Do you use pre-determined set lists, or do you take requests (or read the crowd)?
10. Do you design an itinerary for the night?
At the end of the day, just keep in mind that your DJ is there for you! This is your wedding day, so make sure your DJ fits in with the style of your day and can play music you’ll love!
